Verizon CTO talks about femtocell plans
Mark Wegleitner revealed some of Verizon’s thinking on femtocells in a recent interview with Telephony Online…
“On femtocells and dual-mode phones: We’re planning for trial of femtocells. Both had obstacles. In one case, the femtocell cost was a problem. In other case, the availability of dual-mode phones was a problem. Both [...]

iPhone 3G problems are due to network issues
A study commissioned by Wired with voluntary participation of 3G iPhone users around the world has revealed that reported problems with data speed “have more to do with carriers’ networks than with Apple’s handsets.” The results of 2,600 download speed measurements plotted here reveal significant variations in the [...]

News from the Femtocells Europe 2008 conference in London and the subsequent Femto Forum meeting
The femtocell industry is remarkably friendly. Here’s picoChip’s Rupert Baines (my partner in crime in Working Group 1 at the Femto Forum) with Yoav Volloch and Shlomo Gadot from chip competitor Percello.

RFN clearly couldn’t stand back and watch Kineto spinning up a victory story in the femtocell standards battle. Some strong language in this Unstrung interview with RFN’s GM EMEA Mark Keenan (who is also a Femto Forum board member). This will make the upcoming Femto Forum gathering even more lively than usual.

Will SFR be first with femtocells in Europe?
“Sources” said this week that SFR will put femtocells on sale in France before the end the year. One factor driving SFR is Orange’s “Unik” dual-mode FMC service, which offers a similar customer proposition to femtocells albeit with different technology. Another is SFR’s acquisition of Neuf Cegetel, France’s [...]

Was Airave Sprint’s second choice?
This article makes the interesting assertion that Sprint originally planned to roll out a WiFi dual mode service, but switched to femtocells after the launch of HotSpot@Home by T-Mobile. The author argues that femto was therefore Sprint’s second choice, but it looks to me as though the headline should read [...]
