Ubiquisys wide area femtocell - correction

The transmit power of the Ubiquisys wide area femtocell is a tiny 10mW - not the "vastly higher 20-30W" incorrectly stated in the blog. 10mW is normal for a femtocell.

The demonstration equipment had an electrical supply of 20-30W - about the same as a single lightbulb - perhaps this is where the misconception arose.

Thanks, Toby. I've seen some analysts proposing that mobile data will have to move away from flat rate to tiered pricing (e.g. as with fixed broadband, consumers are used to paying more for a faster connection). Will this work?

The problem that mobile operators have created for themselves is that by pricing the data at below cost (in order to generate usage) they may well disrupt their core voice services. The data genie is now out of the bottle and consumers are unlikely to want to pay more for existing services.

Andy-- Thanks for noting our 2.75G picocell announcement. In response, HSL's picocell will differ from the HSL 2.75G Femtocell in areas that exceed what is necessary to be included in a femtocell-class device. This includes support in the picocell for TA (timing advance), PoE, multi-TRX, indoor and outdoor enclosures, integrated BSC and (at a later date) multi-band support (900/1800). The femtocell product will become available in two maximum output power models instead of the current single model: one with a maximum power output of 23dBm and the other with a maximum power output of ~12dBm. --Mark Hay, Managing & Technical Director, HSL

We don't currently have an open API for our picocells. It's something to consider, though.
